Funded holistic security support for NED grantees

In order to maximise the impact of this funded support, it is available for those meeting all of the following criteria:

• current NED grantee;

• rights-based CSO/NGO; and

• based in a country with a closed, repressed or obstructed civic space (as assessed by the CIVICUS Monitor).

We are currently prioritising civil society organisations in Latin America and the Caribbean; however, we will provide support wherever the need is the greatest.

Support is available across safety and security, digital security, and wellbeing and resilience. It is offered in three key capacity-building areas: training, mentoring and technical support. Some examples of the available support are provided below; however, this is not an exhaustive list, and we will endeavour to provide tailored support in response to need.

Training

• Security risk management principles

• Risk assessment principles

• Crisis management principles and tools

• Information security

• Wellbeing for human rights defenders

Mentoring

• Mentoring to those with security responsibilities

• Mentoring for system administrators (sysadmins)

• Wellbeing focal point mentoring

Technical

• Developing travel procedures

• Conducting travel or programme risks assessments

• Remote site security assessment support

• Developing contingency plans (e.g. responding to raids or detention; election contingency planning)

• Digital security incident response coordination

1. Identify: NED identifies a grantee that may benefit from support and fits all the criteria.

2. Discuss: NED discusses potential support with the grantee to understand what is required and confirm the process and commitment.

3. Request: NED representative completes a support request form.

4. Contact: Open Briefing contacts the grantee to confirm the exact support required and ensure their commitment is understood.

5. Confirm: Open Briefing confirms the agreed support, timelines and expected number of hours to NED and the grantee.

6. Deliver: Open Briefing delivers the support to the grantee, confirming completion with NED.

• Impact: We are keen to ensure that as many CSOs/NGOs as possible can benefit from this support. As such, we estimate 6-8 hours of support to each agreed grantee.

• Commitment: The grantee needs to be both available and committed to working with Open Briefing.

• Timing: The support is available between 09.00 and 17.00 (GMT/DST), Monday to Friday. As such, it is not appropriate for emergency response or crises.

• Language: Open Briefing can deliver holistic support in Spanish or English. We can also deliver wellbeing support in French. Please see our language matrix for details.

• Remote: In order to maximise impact and minimise emissions, all support will be delivered remotely. (On-site support is available separately to self-funding organisations or those able to access additional funding from grantmakers or partners.)

• Confidentiality: Any support provided will remain confidential between NED, the grantee and Open Briefing.
